Low Plain tree harvest

Tree harvest

The New London Conservation Commission has scheduled and completed tree harvests at the Esther Currier Wildlife Management Area at Low Plain to improve the health of the forest area and to attract new wildlife species to the property.

TREE HARVEST

March 2021 - A tree harvest was completed at the Esther Currier Wildlife Management Area at Low Plain. Work was performed on the newly acquired thirty acres along Rte. 11 (Andover Road) and at the southeast portion of the property below Wilder Lane.

.

benefits

The harvest will help to improve the overall health of forest by removing diseased trees, opening densely packed areas, and creating improved wildlife habitat areas.

The sale of the harvested wood covered the cost of the work and made a profit for the Town of New London.

tree farm certification

The ECWMA at Low Plain is a certified Tree Farm. That designation took place in 2016 on the original 168 acres. The newly acquired 30 acre section of the property, where the latest harvest took place, received certification in 2019.

plantings

Following previous harvests, new trees and shrubs were planted in the cleared areas. The types of plants selected were ones that would provide good food and shelter for wildlife. There will be new plantings in the recently cleared areas, including a section where American Chestnut trees will be planted.
